Curriculum Policy and Overview

SHS Curriculum Policy

Our Curriculum Lead is Miss Martin.

The curriculum at Stocksbridge High School is divided into two key stages: Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8, and 9) and Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11). All students study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, and Science from Year 7 through to Year 11, following 5-year programmes that align with National Curriculum requirements and GCSE specifications.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Key Stage 3 provides a broad and balanced experience, helping students build strong foundations for their further studies in Key Stage 4. In addition to the core subjects, students also study:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Modern Foreign Languages (French and Spanish)
  • Design and Technology (including Food)
  • Music
  • PE
  • Art
  • Drama
  • Computer Science

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

In Year 9, students choose four options to study at GCSE or an equivalent level during Key Stage 4. This is in addition to the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, and Science.

Options include a range of both academic and vocational subjects, but all students are expected to take a Humanity subject (either Geography or History) and a Modern Foreign Language, in line with the English Baccalaureate requirements. Students also have the opportunity to take separate Science GCSEs in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, or opt for Combined Science, which awards two qualifications. As a result, most students will graduate from Stocksbridge High School with at least 9 qualifications.

Alternative Learning Pathway (ALP)

For students needing additional support, we offer an Alternative Learning Pathway (ALP) This programme provides extra help with reading and literacy, delivered by specialist staff. It replaces some regular lessons and can lead to entry-level qualifications in Key Stage 4.

SMSC Provision (Social, Moral, Spiritual, and Cultural Education)

Throughout all year groups, we incorporate SMSC education, which plays a crucial role in helping students grow up with a strong understanding of modern Britain. This includes appreciation for art, music, sports, and other cultural activities, as well as developing thoughtful opinions on social and moral issues. Additionally, students learn about Britain’s democratic system, including voting and political awareness.

Life Plus

Life Plus is a subject taught across all year groups—1 hour per fortnight for Years 7-11. It covers the Relationships, Sex, and Health Education statutory requirements set by the government in 2020, citizenship, British values, and life skills for living in the wider world. RE is taught as a separate discreet subject 1 lesson per fortnight.

Timetable Structure

To accommodate this wide range of subjects, we operate a two-week timetable consisting of 50 lessons (25 per week). Each lesson lasts 1 hour, although some practical subjects, like Design and Technology, may have double lessons to ensure there is enough time for hands-on activities.
